The Importance of Acknowledging Childhood Trauma in the Clinical Field

by Rita Ballantyne

There is a distinct lack of discussion pertaining to the lasting damage narcissistic parents inflict on their children, a shortfall so intense that some of the victims themselves don't recognise the harm done to them either, or accept the abuse as being their fault. One of the saddest things is that most children or grown-up survivors never get help or relate their lifelong relationship troubles back to their real origins. They are often categorised by society as having only suffered emotional abuse at best. It is disappointing how lots of professionals and, in particular, physicians and counsellors, minimise the pain those who have lived through lasting emotional trauma are feeling and the impact it has on the patients' physical and psychological well-being. Don't judge and condemn what you don't understand. By taking the reader through my own personal journey dealing with this kind of abuse, I aim to present how detrimental emotional abuse can be and try to bridge that above mentioned gap in general knowledge.

The Inner Tarot: How to Use the Tarot for Healing and Illuminating the Wisdom Within

by Kate Van Horn

Featuring illustrations from the Rider-Waite deckTarot has an uncanny knack for illuminating what already exists in our energies, bodies, and intuitions. When harnessed, it can serve as a helpful tool for empowered healing. Like the 78 cards, the journey of self-inquiry and personal healing is cyclical. We come to understand ourselves in periods of adversity, reflect and celebrate in periods of light, and have opportunities to be curious and explore the liminal space between trial and error. The Inner Tarot isn't just a book about how to read the cards, it's a guidebook for those ready to embark on a healing journey and who are seeking tools to help them foster their intuition and connect to their sense of purpose. Just like a deck of tarot cards, the book is divided into two parts. Part 1 is a primer, offering high-level information for readers on what tarot cards are, their history, how to read them with confidence, as well as reading as a ritual. Part 2 will guide the reader through individual card interpretations as well as thought-provoking, heart-opening exercises intended to facilitate healing and teach resilience. This book not only teaches the fundamentals of how to read the cards, but also how the cards can support readers in their healing. Readers will have a new approach to self-inquiry, find a new depth in their experience, pride for their personal story, and an empowered approach to their communication.

Intuition: Unlock Your Brain's Potential to Build Real Intuition and Make Better Decisions

by Joel Pearson

We have all experienced a 'gut reaction' or acted 'on a hunch' – we've used our intuition.Until recently, science didn't have a good explanation for how intuition works. In fact, some scientists dismissed it altogether as unproveable and 'woo woo'.Here, in the first book to explain the science behind intuition, Professor Joel Pearson, an expert in cognitive neuroscience and leader in human consciousness research, turns what we think we know about intuition on its head.At his dedicated lab at Sydney's prestigious University of New South Wales, Pearson was able to identify and recreate intuition in a lab, proving its existence and laying the groundwork for this book – a practical and entertaining introduction to the brain science underpinning intuition, and a framework for how we can develop the ability and put it to use, in the boardroom and beyond.Intuition follows basic rules, and Pearson explains that by understanding them, we can better train ourselves to use our intuition productively, supercharging this incredible human ability and harnessing it toward better decision-making.Intuition is not a sixth sense – it's a superpower.

According to recent studies, barely a third of American workers feel &“engaged&” at work, and for many people around the world, happiness is lowest when earning power is highest. In Is Your Work Worth It?, two professors – a philosopher and organizational psychologist – investigate the purpose of work and its value in our lives. The book explores vital questions, such as: Should you work for love or money? When and how much should you work? What would make life worth living in a world without work? What kind of mark will your work leave on the world? This essential book combines inspiring and harrowing stories of real people with recent scholarship, ancient wisdom, arts, and literature to help us clarify what worthy work looks like, what tradeoffs are acceptable to pursue it, and what our work can contribute to society.

The Laws of Connection: 13 Social Strategies That Will Transform Your Life

by David Robson

In the early 1960s scientists at the University of California, Berkeley set out to establish the key factors affecting health and longevity. Their results, known as the 'Alameda 7', you already know: don't smoke, drink in moderation, sleep seven to eight hours a night, exercise, eat regular meals, maintain a moderate weight, eat breakfast. Years later, however, the same team discovered an eighth factor, one that proved more important than all the others: social connection. When we form meaningful bonds with others, our wounds heal faster, we shake off infections more quickly and our blood pressure drops. We are less likely to have Alzheimer's, heart attacks or strokes. When people feel that they have strong social support, they perform better on tests of mental focus, memory and problem solving. Greater connection can fuel creativity, increase our financial stability and enhance our work productivity. But making friends can also be daunting. In The Laws of Connection, David Robson does two important things: he takes us through the fascinating science behind the effects of social connection and he unpacks the research that shows that we are all better at being social than we might think. We meet ideas such as 'the liking gap' and 'the gratitude gap', learn to recognise 'frenemies' and discover a powerful conversational strategy known as the 'fast-friends procedure' that promotes instant rapport. Being social doesn't have to mean having dozens of friends, it can also mean having one true, deep connection with another person. As Robson shows, we can all benefit from the laws of connection.
