It assembled more than 300 researchers and practitioners in the fields of technology, philosophy, history of ideas, literature, linguistics, social· science, etc. The conference was an initiative from the Swedish Center for Working Life, based on the project AI-Based Systems mzd the Future of Language, Knowledge and Re sponsibility in Professions within the COST 13 programme of the European Commission. Participants in the conference, or in some cases researchers in areas related to its aims, were chosen to contribute to this book. It was preceded by Knowledge, Skill and Artificial Intelligence (ed. B. Gbranzon and I. Josefson, Springer-Verlag, London, 1988) and Artificial Intelligence, Culture and Language (ed. B. Gbranzon and M. Florin, Springer-Verlag, 1990). The latter book springs, as this one, from the 1988 conference, and one further book will follow: Skill and Education: Reflection and Experience (Springer Verlag, planned autumn 1991). The philosophical and aesthetic interest of the contributions in the present volume is in large part due to the framework of the Dialogue Seminar, held regularly at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm, in which several of the contributors have participated.

NATO Advanced Study Institutes are high level teaching activities at which a carefully defined subject is presented in a systematic and coherently structured program. The subject is treated in considerable depth by lecturers eminent in their fields and of international standing. The presentations are made to students who are scientists in the field or who possess an advanced general scientific background.

GladtDieses Buch ist aus der Konfrontation eines in der Markenartikelindustrie tatigen Firmenjuristen mit der praktischen Verwendung von Kennzeichen im Wettbewerb auf verschiedenen Handelsstufen und aus der Erfahrung entstan den, wie weit die Kennzeichenpraxis Gesetz und Rechtslehre vorausgeeilt ist, und wie wenig tradierte zeichenrechtliche Anschauungen dem erreichten Entwicklungsstand entsprechen. Diese Diskrepanz mu6 sich nachteilig auf den legitimen Rechtsschutzbedarf eines Markenartikelunternehmens auswir ken. Aus einem unter diesem Gesichtspunkt zunachst geplanten kritischen Artikel flir eine Fachzeitschrift ist so ein ganzes Buch geworden. Es hatte nicht entstehen konnen ohne die U nterstiitzung und Hilfe einer Mehrzahl von Personen, denen ich hieflir zu Dank verpflichtet bin. by Bernd WarkentinDas Buch beschäftigt sich vor dem Hintergrund der biologischen Evolution mit den Risiken der menschlichen Geburt. Es wird gezeigt, welche Bedeutung die Geburt für die Entwicklung des Menschen und seiner geistigen Fähigkeiten hat. Dabei finden auch Phänomene wie die Begrenzung der weiblichen Fruchtbarkeitsphase und die psychophysische Akzeleration eine Erklärung. Die moderne Geburtshilfe hat wesentlich dazu beigetragen, daß immer größere Kinder geboren werden können. Innerhalb weniger Generationen konnten sich so genetische Anlagen ausbreiten, die sich früher aufgrund des Mißverhältnisses von Geburtskanal und kindlichem Kopfumfang selbst eliminiert haben. Dennoch bleibt der Mensch als biologisches Wesen evolutionären Gesetzmäßigkeiten unterworfen.
