Issues in the Structure of Arabic Clauses and Words (Studies in Natural Language and Linguistic Theory #29)

This study has a twofold goal. First, it investigates the internal structure of words and clauses in Standard Arabic (SA), in the light of recent developments of Government and Binding Theory (GB). Second, it argues for a specific theory of typology, and proposes a particular view of how parametrization can be construed and executed. SA is a language used throughout the Arab world, in contrast to specific local dialects which are limited to a particular area. The language has a number of features which make it particularly suitable for cross-linguistic comparative morpho-syntax, as well as research in different modules of the theory of grammar. SA morphology is essentially non-concatenative, though a rich analytic affixation system makes word formation hierarchical. Word order in SA is basically VSO, but the language has alternative SVO structures as well. Sentences can be 'nominal' (i.e. with no verb or copula realized at surface structure), or verbal. Arguments can be left syntacti­ cally unexpressed (i.e. SA is a null argument language). SA is an agreement language, with a rich and complex agreement system interacting with word order, pronominal incorporation, and expletive structures. It also has a productive morphological case system. Tense, Aspect, Modal, and Negation properties interact in intriguing ways. Finally, SA's DP system exhibits interesting complementary distributions between overt determiners, genitive complements, and possessive markers. It also uses different licensing strategies for Genitive Case marking.

The work is based on fresh research in university and diocesan records, and supported by an appendix of transcriptions of unpublished archival material.

Kleists Geheimnisse: Unbekannte Seiten einer Biographie

Das Buch von Dirk Grathoff schlägt eine neue Lösung für das Rätsel der Würzburger Reise Heinrich von Kleists aus dem Jahre 1800 vor, dem die Forschung bislang vergebens nachspürte. Weder eine Geschlechtsoperation noch Industriespionage waren der Anlaß für die Reise, wie ältere Spekulationen mutmaßten, sondern Bemühungen, mit Freimaurern außerhalb Preußens in Kontakt zu kommen, um von ihnen eine mäzenatenartige Unterstützung für seine geplante philosophische Ausbildung zu erhalten. Mit diesem Anliegen ist Kleist in Würzburg offensichtlich gescheitert, doch die Kontakte, die er dort knüpfen konnte, waren hochkarätig: Er traf mit Christoph Wilhelm Hufeland, dem Jenaer Mediziner und späteren Direktor der Berliner Charité, und mit Gustav Graf von Schlabrendorf zusammen. Die Begegnung mit dem schlesischen Grafen von Schlabrendorf, der seit 1789 im Pariser Exil lebte, eröffnet neuartige Perspektiven für Kleists antinapoleonische Einstellung, die schon frühzeitig während seiner Besuche in Paris durch girondistische Schriften von Schlabrendorfs beeinflußt worden ist. Insgesamt wird mit dem Buch Kleists Entwicklung zum Schriftsteller in einer bisher noch nicht bekannten Sicht vorgestellt.

If so (and it does seem to be the case), one may wonder what makes this possible. The aim of this conference was to investigate the role of conceptual structure in cognitive processes, exploring it from the perspectives of philosophy of language, linguistics, political philosophy, psychology, liter­ ary theory, aesthetics, and philosophy of science. The themes of these three volumes reflect the themes of the conference.

This volume, in contrast, presents a critical, integrative review of research and theory on language development and processing across all domains and a variety of etiologies. In addition, many previous attempts to review portions of this research have failed to consider the research within the context of current theory and data from developmental psycholinguistics and linguistics. A major contribution of this book is the emphasis on relevant work outside of mental retardation for understanding and treating the language and communication problems of persons with mental retardation. Finally, this book is comprehensive and up-to-date across all the areas of language covered including appropriate introductory material in linguistics and psychology -- discussions of the innateness, cognition-first and motherese views of normal language acquisition. In addition, the authors' extensive bibliography is valuable in and of itself to any serious student or professional in the area.
