Teaching Games and Game Studies in the Literature Classroom

by Tison Pugh and Lynn Ramey

Teaching Games and Game Studies in the Literature Classroom offers practical suggestions for educators looking to incorporate ludic media, ranging from novels to video games and from poems to board games, into their curricula. Across the globe, video games and interactive media have already been granted their own departments at numerous larger institutions and will increasingly fall under the purview of language and literature departments at smaller schools. This volume considers fundamental ways in which literature can be construed as a game and the benefits of such an approach. The contributors outline pedagogical strategies for integrating the study of video games with the study of literature and consider the intersections of identity and ideology as they relate to literature and ludology. They also address the benefits (and liabilities) of making the process of learning itself a game, an approach that is quickly gaining currency and increasing interest. Every chapter is grounded in theory but focuses on practical applications to develop students' critical thinking skills and intercultural competence through both digital and analog gameful approaches.

The Epistemology of Violence: Understanding the Root Causes of Violence in Schooling (Critical Political Theory and Radical Practice)

by Beth M. Titchiner

This book provides an in-depth, multidisciplinary framework and case-study analysis for understanding the root causes of violence in schooling. Drawing on critical theory, psychology, neuroscience and learning theory, the author provides a holistic analysis of how ‘violent epistemology’ and the ‘non-conducive circumstances’ that it produces can be seen to be at the roots of violence in societies and social institutions such as schools. Chapter 1 outlines how current and historical theories of violence, and interventions based on them, have failed due to their inability to properly conceptualise the root causes of violence. Chapters 2 addresses this by providing a new epistemic and methodological framework for studying violence. Chapters 3 and 4 then demonstrate how violence can be best conceptualised as a problem of specifically ‘violent’ epistemology and the ‘non-conducive social circumstances’ that it fosters. Chapters 5-7 demonstrate in practice how violent epistemology results in multiple manifestations of violence at the global, national, local, and ultimately classroom level. Chapter 8 concludes the book by presenting an early conceptualisation of ‘non-violent’ epistemology, and what fostering this might look like in practice.

Methods Of Text And Discourse Analysis (PDF)

by Titscher Stefan Meyer Michael Vetter Eva

'This volume is the most comprehensive overview to date of sociologically orientated approaches to text and discourse analysis and is worth reading even for those who are interested only in purely linguistic approaches to text and discourse. Its main merit, I think, is that it intoduces approaches which up to now have hardly been admitted into the universe of scientific discourse ' - Discourse Studies. Methods of Text and Discourse Analysis provides the most comprehensive overview currently available of linguistic and sociological approaches to text and discourse analysis. Among the 10 linguistic and sociological models surveyed in this book some of the more important are Grounded Theory, Content Analysis, Conversation Analysis and Critical Discourse Analysis. The book presents each approach according to a standardised format, which allows for direct systematic comparisons. The fully annotated lists of sources provide readers with an additional means of evaluation of the competing analytical methods. Interdisciplinary and international in its aims, Methods of Text and Discourse Analysis suggests the benefits both linguists and sociologists will derive from a more intimate knowledge of each others' methods and procedures.

Why Some Development Works: Understanding Success (International Studies in Poverty Research)

by Meera Tiwari

Why do some development projects succeed where others fail? This book looks at some macro and some less known micro success stories and considers what enabled them to bring change in some of the world's most deprived communities. Using case studies from ten countries across Latin America, Africa, and Asia, Tiwari's innovative approach offers a multi-layered understanding of poverty which provides insights into causal, enabling and impeding factors. While a macro level analysis of development is a common feature of the current literature, there has been little attempt to develop a micro level understanding of development at the grassroots.Tiwari's work fills this important gap while drawing attention to the importance of engaging local actors at an individual, collective, and state level, demonstrating how achieving a “convergence” of goals among all actors is a crucial component to a development project's success.Looking beyond the case studies to consider how this unique “convergence framework” might be usefully applied to other contexts, the book has profound implications for how we view fragile states and conflict zones, and the ability of the international agencies to take effective action. A unique study based on extensive empirical research, Why Some Development Works will make essential reading for students and researchers studying international development across the social sciences, as well as humanitarian and development practitioners and policy makers.

by Tl Kimberly Buch Kenneth E. Barron

Take an in depth look at discipline-centered learning communities. Using psychology as an example, this issue provides prescriptive advice for those interested in developing a learning community in any academic discipline or program. Learning communities are a powerful vehicle for creating and sustaining connections among students, faculty, and the curriculum, but creating one can be a challenge. By providing resources, practical case studies, and theoretical grounding, this volume can both inspire and guide faculty, staff, and administrators in meeting their pedagogical and curricular goals. Learn how the five types of learning communities—based curricularly, residentially, in the classroom, on the students themselves, and even virtually—can be used to enhance student engagement and learning. This is the 132nd volume of this Jossey-Bass higher education series. New Directions for Teaching and Learning offers a comprehensive range of ideas and techniques for improving college teaching based on the experience of seasoned instructors and the latest findings of educational and psychological researchers.

Data Analytics Approaches in Educational Games and Gamification Systems (Smart Computing and Intelligence)

by Ahmed Tlili Maiga Chang

Game-based learning environments and learning analytics are attracting increasing attention from researchers and educators, since they both can enhance learning outcomes. This book focuses on the application of data analytics approaches and research on human behaviour analysis in game-based learning environments, namely educational games and gamification systems, to provide smart learning. Specifically, it discusses the purposes, advantages and limitations of applying such approaches in these environments. Additionally, the various smart game-based learning environments presented help readers integrate learning analytics in their educational games and gamification systems to, for instance, assess and model students (e.g. their computational thinking) or enhance the learning process for better outcomes. Moreover, the book presents general guidelines on various aspects, such as collecting data for analysis, game-based learning environment design, system architecture and applied algorithms, which facilitate incorporating learning analytics into educational games and gamification systems. After a general introduction to help readers become familiar with the subject area, the individual chapters each discuss a different aim of applying data analytics approaches in educational games and gamification systems. Lastly, the conclusion provides a summary and presents general guidelines and frameworks to consider when designing smart game-based learning environments with learning analytics.

The Handbook of Language Assessment Across Modalities (Perspectives on Deafness)

by Tobias Haug, Wolfgang Mann and Ute Knoch

Historically, research on spoken language testing dates back to the late 1920s with the majority of work starting around the time of World War II. In contrast, signed language assessment research is a young area, nested within signed language linguistics, deaf education, and applied linguistics. To this day, very few signed language tests that can be used in applied contexts are available for learners of a signed language. This volume addresses issues that are inherent to language assessment development, regardless of the modality of the language. Comprised of 36 chapters, the book takes a new approach to exploring theoretical and practical issues related to assessment of signed and spoken languages by bringing together well known experts from both fields to engage in stimulating discussions about key issues related to language assessment. Grouped around twelve topics, the volume editors present different perspectives to emphasize the points of similarity and chart a path for future interdisciplinary collaborations .

The Maiden Voyage of Petrus van Stijn: A Novel

by Michael Charles Tobias

Petrus van Stijn’s world is besieged by two prime engines of destruction: massive geomagnetic storms caused by unprecedented solar storms – protracted coronal mass ejections (CME), and climate change wreaking unprecedented, but predictable collapse of the Antarctic ice shelves. Petrus has other problems to contend with, like surviving on a floating archipelago of ice, and then walking 2200 kilometers through a post-Apocalyptic world. At the same time, Petrus will discover something of a true social and biological paradise. Herein lies the paradox of a world where one species – ours – is facing extinction, while others – many genetically re-engineered – are enjoying a biodiversity renaissance. With a Foreword by William Shatner, this provocative, lyrical, deeply philosophical work of fiction explores the ethical limits of science and technology, and the future of all life on earth.
