Discovering Hidden Gems in Foreign Languages (Terrorism, Security, and Computation)

by M.D. Miller

This book offers a practical approach to conducting research in foreign languages on topics with a global nexus. It introduces the problem researchers face when getting started with a research problem, such as setting up the research environment and establishing goals for the research. The researcher then needs to prepares and to conduct foreign-language research by generating key terms and searching the right places where the information they seek is most likely to be stored. Using the appropriate advanced search operators, the researcher narrows down the search results to the desired sources, thereby eliminating the irrelevant sources. Specialized knowledge of country-specific domains advances the specificity and relevance of the researcher’s efforts. The methods and tools demonstrated in this book are applicable to a variety of academic and practical fields. A doctor may ask “what are other experts in my field saying about ABC disease?” A sommelier may ask “where else in the world are XYZ grape varietals grown?” A businessman may ask “who are my global competitors in my market?” A doctoral student may ask “have any other students at universities abroad ever written a dissertation about my topic, too?” With the tools and techniques demonstrated in this book, all of these questions are answerable. This book concludes with chapters on translation and citation methods, and includes three case studies that demonstrate the practical use of the methods discussed above. This book targets academic researchers as well as students and faculty. This book will also be a good fit as an assigned reading for a college course on thesis/dissertation research.

Color in Electronic Display Systems

by Michael E. Miller

This book explores the principles, design, and image processing of multi-primary displays, and introduces the reader to the intricacies of the typical imaging pathways which influence display design and the perception of color within a display system. Early chapters introduce the concepts behind human perception, color science, and lighting, which are necessary to fully understand multi-primary displays. The reader is also introduced to digital capture and transmission systems to better understand the ecosystem in which multi-primary displays exist. Subsequent chapters introduce the reader to current display technologies, including LCD, OLED, and inorganic LED displays. The working principles, performance, and upcoming advances are discussed for each of these technologies to provide the reader with a clear understanding of the tradeoffs which are necessary when considering multi-primary displays. This discussion is followed by an in-depth discussion of the image processing technology necessary to implement multi-primary displays. The book concludes with chapters that clearly discuss the advantages and limitations of multi-primary displays for direct view, virtual reality, and augmented reality displays. The book provides a broad viewpoint across the entire display ecosystem, explaining the interactions among system components to provide a rationale for the further development of multi-primary displays. Whether the reader is interested in broadening their understanding of display systems or the development of multi-primary displays, the text provides and understandable and practical summary of important display system concepts.

Expert Critiquing Systems: Practice-Based Medical Consultation by Computer (Computers and Medicine)

by Perry L. Miller

Computer technology has impacted the practice of medicine in dramatic ways. Imaging techniques provide noninvasive tools which alter the diagnostic process. Sophisticated monitoring equipment presents new levels of detail for both patient management and research. In most of these technology applications, the com puter is embedded in the device; its presence is transparent to the user. There is also a growing number of applications in which the health care provider directly interacts with a computer. In many cases, these applications are limited to administrative functions, e.g., office practice management, location of hospital patients, appointments, and scheduling. Nevertheless, there also are instances of patient care functions such as results reporting, decision support, surveillance, and reminders. This series, Computers and Medicine, will focus upon the direct use of infor mation systems as it relates to the medical community. After twenty-five years of experimentation and experience, there are many tested applications which can be implemented economically using the current generation of computers. More over, the falling cost of computers suggests that there will be even more extensive use in the near future. Yet there is a gap between current practice and the state-of the-art.
