Technology and Rural Women: Conceptual and Empirical Issues (Routledge Revivals)
by Iftikhar AhmedFirst published in 1985, Technology and Rural Women synthesizes the fragmented empirical evidence and the wide range of theoretical approaches on the effects of modernisation on women in the developing world. Using a multi-disciplinary methodology, empirical and sectoral overviews, and country case studies, it draws together the literature to clarify the issues and the policies. The book begins with a conceptual overview and analyses the applicability of traditional theories of technological change and impact on gender based distributional questions. It proceeds to compare the African and Asian experience, examines the African situation regionally, and then as a set of four country case studies. The authors find that the imperfections of rural factor markets have contributed to women’s concentration in labour intensive sectors, marked by low productivity and low returns. Biases in the agrarian structure and the extension services are largely responsible for the Institutionalisation of discrimination against women. Finally, the volume identifies the social, economic, and technical constraints to the diffusion of technologies relevant to rural women’s tasks. In the final chapter the book’s analysis is further refined and extended, so that its conclusions to both theory and policy making are clearly brought out, and areas of future research identified. This book is an essential read for students and scholars of labour economics, women’s studies and economics in general.

Ganz neue Gebiete wurden in der Zwischenzeit eröffnet, insbesondere der Bereich des Wachstums bei erschöpf taren Ressourcen . Aber auch bei der Er~lärung und Ana lyse des technischen Fortschritts und des Bevölkerungswachstums sowie der Einkommens-und Vermögensverteilung im Wachstum haben sich neue Gesichtspunkte ergeben. Auf diese Weise ist ein neues Buch entstanden. Das Ziel ist aber gegenüber dem Buch von Krelle und Gabisch "Wachs tumstheorie" unverändert. Das Buch soll (ich zitiere aus dem dortigen Vorwort) "den Grundstock der Wachstumstheorie auf möglichst einfache Weise darstellen und dem Studenten eine Hilfe bei der Einarbeitung in dies Gebiet der Wirtschaftstheorie geben. Um diesem Zweck gerecht zu werden, . • . (werden) auch einfache mathematische Ableitungen aus führlich gebracht, •. • (sowie) die wichtigsten ökonomischen Interpre tationen und Erläuterungen hinzugefügt, um dem Leser die Bedeutung der Ergebnisse vor Augen zu führen. Hier kann man natürlich noch sehr viel weiter gehen, aber dann wäre das Buch zu dick geworden.

With respect to the decision that the Conference should be held every second year, by this time the Conference has been held in the following countries: Birmingham (1971, UK), Copenhagen (1973, Denmark), Amhurst (1975, USA), Tokyo (1977, Japan), Amsterdam (1979, The Netherlands), Novi Sad (1981, Yugoslavia), Windsor (1983, Canada), Stuttgart (1985, Germany), and the next Conference will take place in Cincinnatti (1987, USA). The number of submitted abstracts and papers was continuously increas ing such that the Programme Committee of this actual 8th Conference on Production Research has been forced to introduce a further refereeing procedure. Each submitted abstract was presented to at least two referees. This resulted not only in a reduction of the number of presented full papers and poster contributions but, as the Programme Committee and the Editiors hope, it led also to a considerable increase in the scientifIc quality of this 8th International Conference on Production Research. The preceeding conference in Windsor, Canada, was dedicated to the topic: Production Research as a Means of Productivity Improvement. We don't believe that this statement has become untrue in the meanwhile.

U.S. and West German Housing Markets: Comparative Economic Analyses

Often such transfers have occurred on a fairly casual level; sometimes greater rigor has been present. In either case, the goal has been to learn from previous experience-at least to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past. In light of the promise that such intercountry transfers hold, it is somewhat surprising that so little energy has gone into careful analytic work on the behavior of households in differing countries and how they respond to various changes, especially those resulting from shifts in public policy. This lack of careful analysis was a major force that motivated The Urban Institute to establish an international studies program in 1982. This volume represents one of the early products of the collaborative efforts that this initiative has spawned. The results of the comparison of the housing markets in West Germany and the United States presented here offer examples of the type of unexpected conclusions that may emerge from careful analyses as well as more anticipated outcomes. Despite the many similarities in the economies of the United States and West Germany and the general free-market orientation of their housing sectors, the papers in this volume document important differences in the way households make decisions about their housing and the consequences of these decisions.

Unemployment, Choice and Inequality
by Michael SattingerThis monograph began as a study of the consequences of labor force effects, in cluding unemployment, for the distribution of earnings. I began by developing a model of job search. But following my previous work on the distribution of earnings, the search theory took a different form from the standard literature. Workers and firms were engaged in mutual search which effectively assigned workers to jobs. A number of open questions immediately became apparent, including the relation bet ween unemployment and inequality, the nature and costs of unemployment, and the role of choice. These quickly provided sufficient material for the monograph. I began work on the project in 1980 at Miami University of Ohio. I wish to thank my chairman there, William McKinstry, for the support I received during my last year there. My colleagues Donald Cymrot and James Moser provided some early com ments on the project and I am indebted to Joseph Simpson for extensive computer assistance.

Weber's research in national and private archives in the Americas and Europe has uncovered more than one hundred codes and ciphers. Beginning with the American Revolution, these secret systems masked confidential diplomatic correspondence and reports.During the period between 1775 and 1938, both codes and ciphers were employed. Ciphers were frequently used for American diplomatic and military correspondence during the American Revolution. At that time, a system was popular among American statesmen whereby a common book, such as a specific dictionary,was used by two correspondents who encoded each word in a message with three numbers. In this system, the first number indicated the page of the book, the second the line in the book, and the third the position of the plain text word on that line counting from the left. Codes provided the most common secret language basis for the entire nineteenth century.Ralph Weber describes in eight chapters the development of American cryptographic practice. The codes and ciphers published in the text and appendix will enable historians and others to read secret State Department dispatches before 1876, and explain code designs after that year.
