- Synopsis
- There is a locator dot shown, which will be at the top left of the page when the image is the correct way up. The components of the experiment are a beaker containing ether, a small quantity of water, a flat section of wood and a tube carrying air to the ether. The demonstration is carried out in a fume cupboard because of the flammability and toxicity of the ether. The demonstration is shown from the side in cross section. The fume cupboard fills the page and has vents at the top of the page to carry away the vapour from the ether. The wood goes across the bottom of the fume cupboard with the beaker of ether, sitting in a small pool of water, up the page above the bottom centre. Air is pumped through the tube from the centre left of the page into the ether in the beaker. This increases the rate of evaporation and causes the temperature of the ether to lower and the water to freeze.
