- Synopsis
- This is a labelled, cutaway side view of a basin solar still used to purify dirty water. There is a locator dot shown, which will be at the top left of the page when the image is the correct way up. The image is surrounded by a dashed line image border. The sun is shown in the top right of the page with its light, represented by five arrows, pointing diagonally left down the page. The solar still occupies most of the rest of the page. It is an insulated box that is buried in the earth at the bottom of the page. At the bottom of the box are two chambers: a large one on the left that holds the dirty water and a collection chamber for the purified water to the right. At the top of the box is a transparent cover that goes diagonally down and left across the page from the top left of the image. The energy from the sunlight heats the water in the chamber of dirty water causing some of it to evaporate (change to a gaseous state). The vapour is represented by arrows with dashed line shafts, pointing up the page above the dirty water. The vapour, now represented by right-pointing arrows, condenses (turns back to a liquid state) on the cooler underside of the transparent cover and runs down to the right, where it drips into the collecting chamber.
