- Synopsis
- This is a labelled, cutaway side view of a desalination plant, often used in arid coastal areas for producing fresh water. There is a locator dot shown, which will be at the top left of the page when the image is the correct way up. Seawater enters the system through a pipe in the bottom right of the image; its direction is indicated by an arrow. It is pumped through a heat exchanger in the centre of the page and then to a tank on the left where it is heated to boiling point. The steam then passes through a pipe at the top left of the image and down to the heat exchanger. Here the pipe is coiled to increase its surface area and the steam is cooled by the incoming filtered seawater and returns to a liquid state. From here the fresh water goes up a pipe at the top right of the page and is pumped to storage tanks; its direction is indicated by an arrow.
