- Synopsis
- This is a painting of ‘Looking south across Whitehaven harbour in a flat calm’ by Robert Salmon (1775-circa 1845) who is considered one of Britains finest maritime artists. This scene was painted at a time when the harbour was at its busiest. It shows a view across from the north side of the harbour towards the Old Quay and Old New Quay. The town is to the left, with the Irish Sea to the right through the harbour entrance. As the title of the painting suggests, it shows a tranquil scene, a blue sky with very little cloud and a harbour and sea that is calm ""like a mill pond"". In the centre of the painting is a two-masted square-rigged wooden sailing ship known as a brig (labelled brig). Although in full sail, the brig is being be towed out towards the harbour entrance and the open sea by a small open topped boat crewed by five rowers (labelled RB). All five rowers have been clearly painted along with the five oars - three on one side and two on the other - and look very small to be towing such a large vessel. The towrope has also been clearly painted along with a small rowing boat attached to the stern of the brig. Obscuring the stern half of the brig is a smaller single-masted sailing ship (labelled smaller ship) in full sail with a figure standing at the bow, the bow towards the harbour entrance and the open sea. The tactile image is a very simplified view of the painting showing the main elements in relation to each other. A thick line forms the border of the painting with very thin lines showing the outline of some of the clouds (labelled clouds). The sea is shown as a rough texture (labelled sea) with no texture for the sky. Solid texture shows the southern harbour wall, the watch tower, the hulls of the ships and boats, and the figures. The sails of the ships are shown with two different textures, one for the brig and one for the other ships. The ships' masts and flagpoles are shown as solid lines with the flag on the watch tower as a hollow shape filled with texture. The shape of the hill behind the quay is shown as a line with lines also showing the outline of the northern harbour wall.
