- Synopsis
- This page shows a diagram of an enlarged villus from the small intestine mucosa. There is a locator dot shown, which will be at the top left, when the image is the correct way up. The image is surrounded by a dashed line image border. The villus is a finger like projection in the middle of the page. To the left and right are the sides of adjacent villi. At the bottom of the page is a lymph vessel running horizontally left to right. Halfway along a branch vessel (lacteal) runs up the centre of the villus. Up from the horizontal lymph vessel is a small vein and then a small artery. A capillary goes up from the artery on the left side of the villus. Small capillaries branch to the right forming a network that goes in front and behind the lacteal. They turn into venous capillaries and flow down and out of the villus to join the horizontal vein at the bottom of the page. The villus has an epithelial outer layer. Set in this layer are mucus-secreting goblet cells.
