- Synopsis
- This page shows three cross sections of different types of blood vessel. There is a locator dot shown, which will be at the top left, when the image is the correct way up. There is an artery on the left, a vein in the centre and a capillary on the right of the page. The artery has a thick muscular wall as it transports blood to the body at pressure. The blood in the veins is no longer moved by the contraction of the left ventricle. Gravity, surrounding muscular activity and valves help return the blood back to the heart and stop backflow. Capillaries supply the body with oxygen and nutriments and remove carbon dioxide. Substances cannot move through the walls of arteries and veins.
