Unit 1, Module 1: Thinking differently

You don't need to become an expert in how different reading aids work, but knowing a little about them will help you to understand why you need to think differently about the way you create documents.

There is a wide variety of reading aids ranging from a simple hand-held magnifier to high-tech options. In this module we look at some of the high-tech options which learners use to read on a PC such as:

  • screen magnification software
  • screen readers
  • screen readers with braille display output.

You will probably hear these high-tech options referred to as "access technology" or "assistive technology"

We also look at some of the reading methods which don't need a computer.
