A Queda d’Um Anjo

by José Viale Moutinho Camilo Castelo Branco

Lopes: The English in Portugal 1383-1387 (Aris & Phillips Hispanic Classics)

by Derek W. Lomax R. J. Oakley

It is astonishing that this is the first English translation of these Chronicles , as they are undoubtably amongst the finest produced in the Middle Ages and treat an important episode in the Hundred Years War. Lopes' mastery of dramatic narrative and picturesque description, so ably captured in this translation, found a fit subject in the foreign interventions and the revolutionary changes that took place in the second half of the 14th century in Portugal. What makes Lopes virtually unique as an historian of that date is his insistence on the use of documentary sources as he explains in his prologue to The Chronicle of Dom Joao , something that he as the keeper of the Royal archives was able to practice so effectively. It seems fitting that Fernao Lopes' great work should appear in a dual language edition as a tribute to the six hundred years alliance, whose beginning he so vividly recalls between the English and Portuguese peoples.

Albuquerque: Caesar of the East. Selected Texts by Afonso de Albuquerque and His Son (Aris & Phillips Hispanic Classics)

by Tom Earle John Villiers

Of all the remarkable people who first opened up the rest of the world to the Europeans Columbus, Magellan, Vasco da Gama, Pizarro and Cortes Afonso de Albuquerque, governor of Portuguese India from 1509 to 1515, was one of the most astonishing. He was a commander of bold strategic conceptions, a far-sighted administrator and in addition a talented writer, whose dispatches to King Manuel contain a wealth of spontaneous narrative, description and pungent comment. Caesar of the East is a specially edited anthology, based on the original Portuguese texts, of selections from these dispatches, or Cartas , and from the Comentarios (Commentaries) written by Albuquerque's son, also called Afonso, about his father's career, with new English translations of both. In the introduction Dr Villiers evaluates the part that Albuquerque played in the foundation of the Portuguese empire in Asia, and Dr Earle provides a literary analysis of the contrasting styles of the Cartas and the Comentarios , where the father's informality and spontaneity contrast fascinatingly with his son's carefully contrived and highly literary narrative. Historical and geographical notes help the reader to understand the text.

Quincas Borba

by Machado De Assis

Along with The Posthumous Memoirs of Br's Cubas and Dom Casmurro, Quincas Borba is one of Machado de Assis' major works and indeed one of the major works of nineteenth-century fiction. With his uncannily postmodern sensibility, his delicious wit, and his keen insight into the political and social complexities of the Brazilian Empire, Machado opens a fascinating world to English-speaking readers. When the mad philosopher Quincas Borba dies, he leaves to his friend Rubiao the entirety of his wealth and property, with a single stipulation: Rubiao must take care of Quincas Borba's dog, who is also named Quincas Borba, and who may indeed have assumed the soul of the dead philosopher. Flush with his newfound wealth, Rubiao heads for Rio de Janeiro and plunges headlong into a world where fantasy and reality become increasingly difficult to keep separate. We encounter roses that speak to each other, discussing the character and actions of their owner, Sofia; even the stars above occasionally comment, sarcastically, on the humans below. When Rubiao falls in love with the wife of his best friend, we see adultery as yet another betrayal of reality. Rubiao's own hold on reality becomes ever more tenuous as he makes elaborate plans for his marriage, even though he has no bride, and fantasizes that he has become Napoleon III. The very nature of reality, the novel seems to be saying, is an agreed-upon fiction told by an unreliable narrator. Brilliantly translated by Gregory Rabassa, Quincas Borba is a masterful satire not only on life in Imperial Brazil but the human condition itself.

Memorial de Aires

by Machado De Assis

The last novel by Brazil's most important writer, Memorial de Aires doesn't have a strict plot. It is structured as a kind of diarly of Counselor Aires, a retired diplomat. His notes tell several stories including that of Tristão, who falls in love with and marries a young widow, Fidália. After their marriage, the couple go to Europe, leaving their friends with only sadness and memories. Known as the novel that best reflects the personality and life of Machado de Assis, Memorial de Aires substitutes the irony and sarcasm of his earlier novels with a compassionate and melancholy tone. Some critics count the novel as a literary and human testament from the master of Brazilian letters.

O Alienista

by Machado De Assis

A sarcastic criticism of the science of its day, O Alientista, considered a classic of Brazilian literature, tells the story of psychiatrist Simão Bacamarte, who convinces the town of Itaguaí to pay for an assylum, and begins to fill it with residents he believes insane. While the assylum at first has a few patients, it grows quickly until, after a revolt by many in the town is fought off, it includes 4/5ths of the town! Realizing something is wrong, Bacamarte releases those committed saying that those committed are infact normal. Instead, he concludes, the insane are those who are considered normal or exemplary. Then his friends convince him that he is, in fact, exemplary. . .

CÁLCULO CIENTÍFICO com MATLAB e Octave

by A. Quarteroni F. Saleri
