Exponentiated Distributions (Atlantis Studies in Probability and Statistics #5)

by Essam K. AL-Hussaini Mohammad Ahsanullah

This book contains entirely new results, not to be found elsewhere. Furthermore, additional results scattered elsewhere in the literature are clearly presented. Several well-known distributions such as Weibull distributions, exponentiated Burr type XII distributions and exponentiated exponential distributions and their properties are demonstrated. Analysis of real as well as well-simulated data are analyzed. A number of inferences based on a finite mixture of distributions are also presented.

by Manik Bandopadhyay

In Praise of Krishna: Songs from the Bengali

by Edward C. Dimock Denise Levertov

Arising out of a devotional and enthusiastic religious movement that swept across most of northern and eastern India in the period from the fourteenth through the seventeenth centuries, the powerful and moving lyrics collected and elegantly translated here depict the love of Radha for the god Krishna—a love whose intensity and range of emotions trace the course of all true love between man and woman and between man and God. Intermingling physical and metaphysical imagery, the spiritual yearning for the divine is articulated in the passionate language of intense sensual desire for an irresistible but ultimately unpossessable lover, thus touching a resonant chord in our humanity.

Prismatic Jane Eyre: Close-Reading a World Novel Across Languages

by Matthew Reynolds Others

Jane Eyre, written by Charlotte Brontë and first published in 1847, has been translated more than five hundred times into over sixty languages. Prismatic Jane Eyre argues that we should see these many re-writings, not as simple replications of the novel, but as a release of its multiple interpretative possibilities: in other words, as a prism. Prismatic Jane Eyre develops the theoretical ramifications of this idea, and reads Brontë’s novel in the light of them: together, the English text and the many translations form one vast entity, a multilingual world-work, spanning many times and places, from Cuba in 1850 to 21st-century China; from Calcutta to Bologna, Argentina to Iran. Co-written by many scholars, Prismatic Jane Eyre traces the receptions of the novel across cultures, showing why, when and where it has been translated (and no less significantly, not translated – as in Swahili), and exploring its global publishing history with digital maps and carousels of cover images. Above all, the co-authors read the translations and the English text closely, and together, showing in detail how the novel’s feminist power, its political complexities and its romantic appeal play out differently in different contexts and in the varied styles and idioms of individual translators. Tracking key words such as ‘passion’ and ‘plain’ across many languages via interactive visualisations and comparative analysis, Prismatic Jane Eyre opens a wholly new perspective on Brontë’s novel, and provides a model for the collaborative close-reading of world literature. Prismatic Jane Eyre is a major intervention in translation and reception studies and world and comparative literature. It will also interest scholars of English literature, and readers of the Brontës.

Trends in Stem Cell Proliferation and Cancer Research

by Rodrigo R. Resende and Henning Ulrich

The book will discuss the molecular mechanisms of cancer diseases, stem cell proliferation and transformation into cancer cells beyond the physiological processes that occur in normal stem cell biology. Some of the key oncogenic events in cancer and their signaling pathways that regulate cell division cycle progression will be described considering prospects for using such knowledge in advanced cancer therapy. Each chapter shall provide an invaluable resource for information on the most current advances in the field, with discussion of controversial issues and areas of emerging importance

Nitisutha: 3 Panchatrater Galpa (Stories from the Panchatantra) Bangla

by Pandit Pareshchandra Shastri

The present book draws its content from the original stories written by the great Sanskrit scholar Vishnusharma for imparting moral lessons to the royal princes. The original stories are divided into five main sections (Mitra-bheda: The Separation of Friends; Mitra-lábha or Mitra-samprápti: The Gaining of Friends; War and Peace; Loss of Gains and ill-Considered Actions). Each section has several sub stories such as the lion, bull and the fox, the four friends etc to highlight various values and morals. In the present book the stories have been retold using simple and modern language. The word limit for each story has been fixed at 200 words in order to keep them short and easy to read and reflect. Practice exercises have been provided at the end of each chapter/story for recapitulation.
