Deshpandeआगरकरांचा जन्म सातारा जिल्ह्यातील टेंभू या खेड्यात, एका गरीब देशस्थ ऋग्वेदी ब्राह्मण कुटुंबात झाला. घरच्या गरिबीमुळे शिक्षणाचा खर्च भागविण्यासाठी त्यांना अनेक मार्ग चोखाळावे लागले. कधी मामलेदार कचेरीत उमेदवारी करून, कधी माधुकरी मागून तर कधी कंपाउंडरचे काम करून त्यांनी आपले मॅट्रिकपर्यंतचे शिक्षण पूर्ण केले. शिक्षणासाठी ते कर्हाड, अकोला, रत्नागिरी येथे गेले. १८७५ साली ते मॅट्रिक झाले व महाविद्यालयीन शिक्षण घेण्यासाठी पुण्याला आले. पुण्यात त्यांनी डेक्कन कॉलेजला प्रवेश घेतला. वर्तमानपत्रात लिखाण करणे, वक्तृत्व स्पर्धा, निबंध स्पर्धा यांत भाग घेऊन बक्षिसे जिंकणे, शिष्यवृत्ती मिळवणे अशा प्रकारे त्यांची गुजराण चालत असे. गोपाळ गणेश आगरकर व लोकमान्य टिळक यांची ओळख १८७९मध्ये एम. ए. करतांना झाली. त्यांनी एकत्रच शिक्षण घेतले होते. त्यांनीच त्यावेळेस केसरी वृत्तपत्र सुरु करायचे ठरवले होते. त्यात लोकमान्य टिळक, गोपाळ गणेश आगरकर,व विष्णुशास्त्री चिपळूणकर या तिघांचा पुढाकार होता.
