Each subject makes extensive use of the discrete Fourier transform, of convolutions, and of algorithms for the inversion of Toeplitz systems of equations. Digital signal processing is now an established subject in its own right; it no longer needs to be viewed as a digitized version of analog signal process ing. Algebraic structures are becoming more important to its development. Many of the techniques of digital signal processing are valid in any algebraic field, although in most cases at least part of the problem will naturally lie either in the real field or the complex field because that is where the data originate. In other cases the choice of field for computations may be up to the algorithm designer, who usually chooses the real field or the complex field because of familiarity with it or because it is suitable for the particular application. Still, it is appropriate to catalog the many algebraic fields in a way that is accessible to students of digital signal processing, in hopes of stimulating new applications to engineering tasks.

Precisely because it had the status of a confusing hypothesis rather than a self-evident reality, it provoked not only dread and melancholia, but also forms of fantasy. Within this context Lyons gives a fundamentally new account of the aims and nature of Victorian aestheticism, taking as a focus its deceptively simple claim that art is for art's sake first of all.

Because of this, the design of algorithms for solving hard problems is the core of current algorithmic research from the theoretical point of view as well as from the practical point of view. There are many general text books on algorithmics, and several specialized books devoted to particular approaches such as local search, randomization, approximation algorithms, or heuristics. But there is no textbook that focuses on the design of algorithms for hard computing tasks, and that systematically explains, combines, and compares the main possibilities for attacking hard algorithmic problems. As this topic is fundamental for computer science, this book tries to close this gap. Another motivation, and probably the main reason for writing this book, is connected to education. The considered area has developed very dynami cally in recent years and the research on this topic discovered several profound results, new concepts, and new methods. Some of the achieved contributions are so fundamental that one can speak about paradigms which should be in cluded in the education of every computer science student. Unfortunately, this is very far from reality. This is because these paradigms are not sufficiently known in the computer science community, and so they are insufficiently com municated to students and practitioners.
