Battling the Blues

by Darius Boyd

'A legend of the game' - Anthony Seibold 'He's a player that never lets his team down' - Billy Slater Darius Boyd broke into the Brisbane Broncos NRL team in 2006 straight out of high school and was part of the premiership-winning team in his debut season. He'd go on to win another premiership with the Dragons in 2010, claiming the Clive Churchill Medal for man of the match and forever stamping his name as an elite champion of the game. He has played 28 State of Origins for Queensland and taken the field in 23 Tests for Australia - never playing in a losing Australian team. In 15 seasons at the top level, Darius has won nearly every honour the sport can award and is undeniably an NRL great. But listing statistics, awards and premierships doesn't reveal the battles that Darius Boyd has faced off the field. A teenager with a troubled background, he started his career with innate footy talent but also the emotional baggage of an unknown father, the devastating loss of loved ones, and a mother who was walking a mental health tightrope herself, which as a kid he didn't understand. As his talent shone on the field and his profile increased, Darius struggled. Hiding years of depression and unhappiness, playing footy was his escape. But no one can run from themselves forever. The horrific spinal injury to good mate and Newcastle Knights teammate Alex McKinnon was the catalyst that finally broke Darius. Realising he needed help for his anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts, he turned his back on football, checked into a mental health facility and began to mend his life and himself. Now, as he heads into retirement, Darius Boyd is sharing his story, to celebrate his triumphs on the field but, more importantly for him, revealing how to deal with depression, overcome adversity and live with mental illness. He reflects on excerpts from his private journal which charted his journey from the depths of despair to a life of gratitude. It is a heartfelt message he now takes across the NRL and into boardrooms, schools and footy clubs in a quest to keep our young men alive. BATTLING THE BLUES is a raw, honest and inspiring memoir that takes us into the heart of an NRL champion and his fight to conquer his demons and live a better life.

Political Economies of the Middle East and North Africa

by Robert Springborg

Despite its oil wealth, the Middle East and North Africa is economically stagnating. Growth rates are comparatively unfavorable and insufficient to substantially improve citizens’ lives. Whether this economic inertia can be overcome or will continue into the indefinite future is a vital question that confronts both the region and the world. In this book leading Middle East scholar Robert Springborg discusses the economic future of this region by examining the national and regional political causes of its contemporary underperformance. Overgrown, weak MENA states, he explains, have been unable to escape their unfavorable historical legacies. “Limited access orders” and the deep states based in the means of coercion that underpin them undermine state capacities and constrain beneficial, autonomous political and economic activity. Increasingly challenged by their populations, MENA states face the daunting and so far unmet challenge of diversifying non-sustainable, rentier political economies away from direct or indirect dependence on oil and gas revenues. Stagnation of those revenues and failure to generate alternative income sources, combined with rapid population growth, presents the region with an economic challenge that can only be overcome by profound political change.

Talking Books: Pioneering and Beyond

by Marilyn Lundell Majeska

Although libraries had been finding ways to serve blind patrons as early as the late nineteenth century, the passage of the Pratt-Smoot Act in 1931 was a game-changer. Congress appropriated funds to provide books for blind adults, and the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped was established. The five decades after Pratt-Smoot saw many technological developments in recording machines and techniques, some coming hand in hand with innovations in the music industry: from record players, to reel-to-reel tapes, to cassette players. Inevitably, the "talking books" program would always be a compromise between the best possible product and the limitations of what was practical and economically feasible. Author Majeska synthesizes information from interviews and old files to compile a detailed history of talking books from 1932 to 1988--before computers changed the whole scene.

Apostle to Mary Magdalene

by Julie De Vere Hunt

Alludes to the premise that Mary Magdalene was a former prostitute and had a child by Jesus. Ties in with a new blockbuster film of Mary Magdalene starring Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix. Released on the day after the Feast Day of Mary Magdalene on July 22 officially recognised by the Vatican since 2016! No woman in the history of Christianity has captured the imagination more since the publication of Dan Brown s novel the Da Vinci Code brought her back into our consciousness. Repentant sinner, bride of Jesus, mother, teacher, healer and priestess.... these are just some of the roles ascribed to her. De Vere Hunt started hearing an inner voice and several events led her to believe it was Mary Magdalene, urging her to write this book. In an easy-to-read A-Z format, de Vere Hunt provides an overview of what little we do know about her from religious scholars gleaned from both the New Testament Gospels and the Gnostic Gospels relatively recently. The author touches on quantum physics and discusses metaphysical phenomena such as the Akashic Records, Cellular Memory, Meditation and the Zero Point Field as an additional source to establish the truth. Through her inner voice and access to the Akashic Records de Vere Hunt draws her own conclusions about the myths and legends surrounding Mary Magdalene. The revelations will seem at best unbelievable and even heretical to some, but historically only what we don t understand is ascribed to magic/witchcraft. Many major discoveries have been met with violent opposition as they contravene our belief systems. De Vere Hunt is confident her theories will be borne out by quantum physics in the fullness of time. Controversy is preferable to lack of interest or apathy and brings Mary Magdalene back into our consciousness to enable her to fulfil her role in present day. Mary Magdalene is here in our midst now to help us make the transition into the Age of Aquarius where the Divine Feminine and Divine Masculine will stand side by side in equal partnership and enable us to live in a better world. De Vere Hunt gives practical suggestions as to how we can all experience heaven on earth and give us hope for a better future.

Boozing, Betting & Brawling: The Autobiography of Mel Sterland

by Mel Sterland

Boozing, Betting & Brawling is the autobiography of former footballer, Mel Sterland, who played for Sheffield Wednesday, Glasgow Rangers and Leeds United. He was also capped once by England. The book which is co-authored by Sheffield-based journalist, Nick Johnson, opens with Sterland recounting plans to commit suicide after being forced into premature retirement from playing. Following an indifferent start to his career at Sheffield Wednesday, Sterland made his name as a marauding full-back, playing under high-profile managerial trio Jack Charlton, Howard Wilkinson and Ron Atkinson. He made a big-money move to Glasgow Rangers, where he played under another well-known football personality, Graeme Souness. Despite being at Ibrox for only a brief spell, Sterland is fondly remembered by Rangers fans for scoring the goals which helped the Glasgow giants win the first of a record-equalling nine league titles. Following his transfer to Leeds, where he played alongside the likes of Eric Cantona and Gordon Strachan, Sterland won a First Division championship-winner's medal, making him one of only a handful of players to win the league title in both England and Scotland. Sterland's story features a heady mix of humour, gambling and punch-ups, and will have widespread appeal to football supporters. In the interests of authenticity, no attempt has been made to smooth off the rough edges, creating an honest, raw account.
