Stress-Free Navigation: Electronic and Traditional

by Duncan Wells

You might think stress-free navigation sounds like an impossible paradox. But it need not be. All boaters, whether under sail or under power, need to be able to navigate safely on the water – both to keep themselves and their crew out of trouble and to avoid endangering others. Yet navigation has often been presented almost as a black art – complicated, full of tricky maths, and with alien concepts to get your head around. Step in 'Mr Stress-Free': having in his previous books presented techniques for sailing and motorboating in an accessible, manageable fashion, Duncan Wells now turns his attention to navigation. He makes concepts easy to understand and the practice of navigation perfectly achievable for all – with minimum stress. The book covers the basic introductory elements clearly and simply for novices, and progresses through more advanced techniques for experienced navigators, so that there is something for everyone, whatever their skill level. Diagrams, quick-reference tables and flowcharts, explanatory step-by-step photographs, box features, top tips and QR codes – giving access to explanatory videos – are all features that have been much appreciated by readers of Duncan's other top-selling titles.

Stress-free Sailing: Single and Short-handed Techniques

by Duncan Wells

The vast majority of sailing yacht scenarios comprise a couple sailing the boat together, and needing to carry out all manoeuvres and activities themselves with no help from a back-up crew. Their boat handling, navigation, sail handling, anchoring and mooring skills all have to be carried out both efficiently and effectively, preferably with the minimum of physical effort (to conserve energy). But most sailing technique books assume a crew of 3 or 4, all willing to lend a hand. This book is therefore a first, addressing the most common sailing scenarios that anyone cruising will have to deal with, and providing clever, original, highly effective (and most importantly successfully tried and tested by the author) techniques and solutions for dealing with the huge variety of essential operations on a boat – from sail setting and reefing, to picking up mooring buoys in a variety of wind and tide situations, anchoring, berthing and leaving a pontoon shorthanded, picking up a man overboard, sailing in fog and heavy weather – and even going up the mast. This book will be a godsend to anyone sailing single or shorthanded – including couples with young children who need to be supervised by one parent whilst the other runs the boat.Organised into techniques for different cruising scenarios, the book features step by step sequential photos showing exactly how to approach each situation and carry out the task in hand.

Stretch Intensity and the Inflammatory Response: A Paradigm Shift

by Nikos C. Apostolopoulos

In this manuscript, practitioners and students who are concerned with sports and rehabilitation medicine, kinesiology, as well as coaches and athletes, are introduced to numerous concepts, including mechanotransduction, inflammation, pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines, calpains, the extracellular matrix, neutrophils and macrophages, and their relevance to stretching, particularly stretching intensity. Although the quantitative parameters of training, duration, and frequency are important, it is the qualitative criterion of intensity (“how much”) that the author suggests is ultimately of greater concern. Intensity, the rate and magnitude of force, may be responsible for the proper recovery, regeneration, and adaptation of the musculoskeletal tissues from training, competition, or rehabilitation from injuries. Research suggests that too much force results in the stimulation of an inflammatory response, one associated with a biochemical feedback emerging from a mechanical stimulus. The intent of this manuscript is twofold: to initiate the discussion of the importance of stretching intensity with regard to proper recovery, regeneration, and adaptation, and to suggest that researchers need to explore its potential role in addressing numerous inflammatory (RA) and non-inflammatory (OA, recurrent tendinitis etc.) musculoskeletal conditions as well.

Striker, Stopper

by Moti Nandy

Striker is the story of a young football player, Prasoon Joshi, whose father, once a top scorer in the Calcutta League, is completely sidelined after being accused by the club of deliberately throwing the winning goal. As a young player struggling to make his mark, Prasoon not only has to battle the ruthless exploitation of the football clubs, his family’s straitened financial circumstances, and his own development as a player, but he has also to exorcise his father’s ghosts. Stopper, on the other hand, is the story of the much older Kamal Guha, a veteran player with an eclectic record, now playing the final game of his career... Both novellas brilliantly capture the heady highs, and the crushing lows, the heroism – and the ignominy – of sport. However, it is always the game, and the action on the field, that is the real hero of Moti Nandy’s writing.
