- Synopsis
- This page shows two diagrams of stomata from a plant leaf. There is a locator dot shown, which will be at the top left, when the image is the correct way up. Each image is surrounded by a dashed line image border. There is a closed stomata at the top and an open stomata at the bottom of the page. In the centre of the top image are two Ĺ“banana shaped guard cells. They have a nucleus and a slight gap between them. They close at night to limit the amount of carbon dioxide being absorbed and the amount of water being lost. They will close in daytime to limit water loss if the plant is lacking water. The cells surrounding the guard cells are slightly shrivelled from water loss so the stomata is closed. In the centre of the bottom image the guard cells are turgid with water. The gap between them has opened up. The cells surrounding the guard cells are also turgid with water.
