- Synopsis
- This is a scene from a typical Egyptian book of the dead: a papyrus scroll describing the afterlife, with spells and hymns to help the deceased on their journey. There is a locator dot shown, which will be at the top left of the page when the image is the right way up. The image shows the heart of Hunefer (who is not shown here) being weighed against the feather of truth. Included are: the jackal-headed god Anubis, the demon Ammit (in the form of a crocodile-cat-hippo), a pair of scales with the head of Maat - goddess of truth, and the ibis-headed god Thoth recording the event. At the top centre of the page is a feather on top of the head of Maat, which in turn sits on top of the central post of a pair of scales. The two arms of the scales extend out to the left and right. Hanging down from the left arm is a pan with a pot containing the heart of Hunefer. Hanging from the right arm is a pan with a feather on it. To the left of the scales' post is a side view of Anubis kneeling on a box and facing to the right. He is holding out both arms to the right with the uppermost one adjusting the scales. To the right of the post is the demon dog Amunet. He is seen from the side, sitting with his body facing to the left and his head to the right. Only two of his legs can be seen. At the top right of the page is Thoth's ibis head seen from the side with his beak pointing left and his hair to the right. Down the page from this is his torso facing forward. Both arms are extending out to the left and he is holding a pen and a scroll. Further down the page are his short kilt and his two bare legs facing to the left.
