- Synopsis
- This image shows a walrus seen from the side with its head on the left of the page and its back flippers on the right of the page. There is a locator dot shown, which will be at the top left of the page when the image is the correct way up. The walrus's head is in the top left of the page. On the top edge of the tip of its nose is one of its nostrils. To the right of this is one of its eyes. The ears cannot be found as a fold of skin hides them. The head is turned slightly towards you so both large tusks can be found. They go down and curve to the right slightly. They are hugely modified upper canine teeth. To the right of the head is the large tubular body. It has several rolls of fat. The walrus needs this fat to keep warm in the Arctic Sea. The walrus is a brownish grey colour all over. In the bottom left of the page are the two front legs. They are short and end in large flippers which are adapted feet. In the bottom right of the image are the back legs. They are also short and are joined together until just before the back flippers. The walrus cannot walk on land, it has to heave itself along on its belly. Once in the water it becomes an agile, graceful, fast and powerful swimmer.
